The Art Forger by B.A. Shapiro

On March 18, 1990, thirteen works of art, today worth over $500 million, were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. It remains the largest unsolved art heist in history, and Claire Roth, a struggling young artist, is about to discover that theres more to this crime than meets the eye.

Making a living reproducing famous artworks for a popular online retailer and desperate to improve her situation, Claire is lured into a Faustian bargain with Aiden Markel, a powerful gallery owner. She agrees to forge a painting a Degas masterpiece stolen from the Gardner Museum — in exchange for a one-woman show in his renowned gallery. But when that very same long-missing Degas painting is delivered to Claires studio, she begins to suspect that it may itself be a forgery.

Her desperate search for the truth leads Claire into a labyrinth of deceit where secrets hidden since the late 19th century may be the only evidence that can now save her life.

Thank you! Since then, she has survived financially by painting reproductions, so when influential gallery owner Aiden Markel arrives with a bizarre proposal—her own show if she will forge a copy of a Degas, one of the pictures stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum—she says yes. Despite a shaky premise, this is convincingly researched, engaging storytelling.

The Art Forger

Isabella Stewart Gardner was decidedly eccentric. She walked lions, not dogs; drank beer, not sherry; and bathed opposite improving maxims rather than wallpaper patterns. In , Gardner opened her Venetian-style gallery — then called Fenway Court — to the city of Boston, enriching generations to come. Today, alas, her name is associated with less savory exploits. To pay the bills, she paints commissioned reproductions, mostly after Impressionist models. These are, she tells herself, copies that simulate the originals, not forgeries.

BA Shapiro 'The Art Forger' Book Trailer

Millions of dollars of art stolen, but despite large rewards and ongoing efforts by the FBI, nothing has been recovered. And to make the offer even sweeter, Markel positions it in ridiculously positive terms:. To push the plot along, Shapiro uses two back stories. The first is in the recent past—just three years ago—and it explains the reason why Claire is not welcomed in the art world—despite her talent. The second is a series of letters from Isabella Stewart Gardner to her fictitious niece Amelia; these letters suggest how Gardner came into possession of the Degas and reveal the inspiration for the piece. Where the story may really disappoint: the number of thrills.
