It takes place after the creation of the Smurfettes. One afternoon in the Smurf Village and Papa Smurf was sitting at a desk in his laboratory in deep thought. His female counterpart, Mother Smurfette, came over to him after doing a few of the house chores. Papa Smurf turned to face her, "I'm fine, my dear," he responded. Mother Smurfette pulled up a chair and sat down next to him, "Whatever's on your mind, Papa Smurf, you can smurf it with me. Papa Smurf sighed, "Whenever I smurf at my little Smurfs getting along well together; it kinda makes me wonder why I'm the only father figure that they have and smurf up to, and that they didn't have their own parents. I know that it was Mother Nature's intention for us to be a single gendered race, but I can't help think about what we would be if we were a two gendered race.

Unlike the previous two films based on the Smurfs by this company, this new film is completely CGI-animated. Uh oh! As the story begins, Smurfette begins to wonder what her purpose in life is, as do the other Smurfs who couldn't particularly define what a Smurfette is supposed to be. Brainy tries to use a special Smurfy Thing Finder that he has invented to discover what Smurfette was purposed for, but unfortunately it explodes when tested on her, leaving Smurfette and the other Smurfs with no answers. Deciding to take their minds off their lack of discovering her purpose, Smurfette along with Brainy, Hefty , and Clumsy go off testing their skills with smurfboarding in the forest. During her run, though, Smurfette lands near the wall separating the Smurf Forest from the Forbidden Forest and discovers what appeared to be a Smurf masked in leaves and other wild clothes, who ran away from Smurfette before she could discover who that Smurf was, although that Smurf dropped a yellow Smurf hat behind.
Papa Smurf is one of the protagonists from the comic strip the Smurfs. Despite his age, he is still quite energetic. Easily distinguishable from all the other Smurfs, Papa Smurf has a bushy white mustache and beard and is typically dressed in red pants and a matching red Phrygian cap , making him the only Smurf who does not wear white. Jonathan Winters , who voiced Grandpa Smurf on the animated series, was Papa Smurf's voice for the film and its sequel , with the latter being Winters' last film before his death. Papa Smurf debuted in and is a gentle, humble, and knowledgeable village elder. As the Smurfs' leader, Papa is a central fatherlike figure that the Smurfs typically go to when seeking counsel. He is very altruistic and is always available to help anybody, whether Smurf or human.
