Leaf by Niggle
Tolkien in —39 and first published in the Dublin Review in January This is notable because the book, consisting of a seminal essay called " On Fairy-Stories " and "Leaf by Niggle", offers the underlying philosophy Creation and Sub-Creation, see below of much of Tolkien's fantastical writings. In this story, an artist, named Niggle, lives in a society that does not value art. Working only to please himself, he paints a canvas of a great Tree with a forest in the distance. He invests each and every leaf of his tree with obsessive attention to detail, making every leaf uniquely beautiful. Niggle ends up discarding all his other artworks, or tacks them onto the main canvas, which becomes a single vast embodiment of his vision.
He did not want to go, indeed the whole idea was distasteful to him; but he could not get out of it. He knew he would have to start some time, but he did not hurry with his preparations.

"Leaf, by Niggle" read by S.D. Smith
Leaf by Niggle by J. Tolkien is a story of multiple layers. When we first read it, at the beginning it may seem to be a story about a man, a painter, who is going to leave for a long journey, but before doing it, he wants to finish his painting. However, after reading the whole text, the moral is clearly visible. On the one level, the story may be interpreted like an extended religious parable. Leaf by Niggle becomes an allegory of life and death, purgatory and heaven, the creation and the sub-creation. It also shows a sad reality of how common and ordinary people are treated after death, and what happens with their work.
