The game uses Valves proprietary Source engine, and is available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Xbox 360. Development on the game was completed on November 13, 2008, and two versions were released digitally: A downloadable digital version, released on November 17, 2008, and a digital retail disc version, with a release date determined by region. The digital retail disc version was released in North America and Australia on November 18, 2008; and in Europe and Japan on November 21, 2008. Set during the aftermath of an apocalyptic pandemic, the game pits its four protagonists-dubbed the Survivors-against hordes of the infected. Left 4 Dead (engine branch)

Left 4 Dead 2 is a cooperative first-person shooter video game developed and published by Valve Corporation. Left 4 Dead 2 builds upon cooperatively focused gameplay and Valve's proprietary Source engine , the same game engine used in the original Left 4 Dead. Set during the aftermath of an apocalyptic pandemic , Left 4 Dead 2 focuses on four new Survivors, fighting against hordes of zombies, known as the Infected, who develop severe psychosis and act extremely aggressive. The Survivors must fight their way through five campaigns, interspersed with safe houses that act as checkpoints , with the goal of escape at each campaign's finale. The gameplay is procedurally altered by the " AI Director 2. Other new features include new types of special infected and an arsenal of melee weapons.

Valve have announced that they will be releasing a set of maps for Left 4 Dead 2 once Portal 2 is done and dusted. The three remaining maps from the first Left 4 Dead will be ported over to Left 4 Dead 2 as part of the pack, and there will be a fourth map from modder Matthew Lourdelet, who made the excellent 2 Evil Eyes campaign. Instead of quietly finishing work on the new map, Valve are throwing its development open to the community, asking for ideas and feedback to help them develop the campaign. Valve made the announcement on the Left 4 Dead 2 blog, where they say that they've been playing Lourdelet's new campaign, Cold Stream. We were tempted to have him quietly finish it with our help and release it as part of an upcoming DLC. Instead, we think we have a better idea.

I have a theory that all the Valve games are actually in the same universe. I have facts to support it too! These games take place during World War II, so they would take place some time between and Next is Team Fortress Classic. This would set it around 's or 50's.

It was maintained side-by-side with the Orange Box branch, but was ultimately discontinued with the release of Portal 2. Unlike other branches, L4D does not require earlier versions of Source to be installed. It stands entirely alone.
