In the World, But Not Of It

Believers in Jesus Christ are simply in the world—physically present—but not of it , not part of its values (John ). As believers, we should be set apart.

Not Of This World

It refers to what Jesus said as recorded by one of His close friends in John and John This concept is also talked about later in the New Testament by the famous convert Paul see: Romans ; Ephesians ; 1 Thessalonians When the word "world" is used in the New Testament, it's a translation of the Greek word cosmos. No, we're not getting all astrological on you. Satan is the Prince of this "cosmos. The Apostle John mentions that the "whole world is under the control of the evil one" 1 John Basically, the system of the world is ruled by Satan.

New International Version They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. New Living Translation They do not belong to this world any more than I do. English Standard Version They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Berean Study Bible They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Berean Literal Bible They are not of the world, as I am not of the world. King James Bible They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

I immediately thought about the all too familiar expression.

IN THE WORLD BUT NOT OF THE WORLD

Sodom and Gomorrah have actual and symbolic significance representing wickedness in the world. Their sinfulness was so great, and those who were righteous so few, that God destroyed these two cities of the plain. Our young people have never faced a greater challenge. We have never seen more clearly the lecherous face of evil. Separating evil from our lives has become even more essential since our homes are wired to bring much of what the Lord has condemned into our own living rooms if we are not vigilant.

Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler. The Bible depicts the devil as a fowler. A fowler is a professional bird catcher. He lays traps and carefully conceals them so that he can ambush unsuspecting birds. The Bible also depicts the devil as a thief and murderer who comes to steal, kill, and destroy see John

Some time ago, my wife and I watched an episode of a comedy series hosted on Netflix. Within a few minutes we became increasingly uncomfortable with the language and content of the humor. We turned off the laptop; watching any further only demonstrated our tacit approval and we wanted to stop before our worldview had been permanently altered. John If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you. John I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler. Not “maybe” or “ sometimes,” but an unqualified “surely.” Not a conditional “He might” but a definitive “He.

Even though we are in this world Christians are not of this world.
