The Phantom Menace (Star Wars: Novelizations, #1) by Terry Brooks

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, an evil legacy long believed dead is stirring. Now the dark side of the Force threatens to overwhelm the light, and only an ancient Jedi prophecy stands between hope and doom for the entire galaxy.

On the green, unspoiled world of Naboo, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, arrive to protect the realm’s young queen as she seeks a diplomatic solution to end the siege of her planet by Trade Federation warships. At the same time, on desert-swept Tatooine, a slave boy named Anakin Skywalker, who possesses a strange ability for understanding the “rightness” of things, toils by day and dreams by night—of becoming a Jedi Knight and finding a way to win freedom for himself and his beloved mother. It will be the unexpected meeting of Jedi, Queen, and a gifted boy that will mark the start of a drama that will become legend.

Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace

When J. All he had to do was make a good Star Wars movie, one that reignited the feelings of childlike adventure that the original trilogy inspired. Despite being the personal brainchild of creator George Lucas , The Phantom Menace took nearly every element of Star Wars that made it a pop cultural touchstone and chucked it out the window. Lucas is on the record as disagreeing with the direction that Disney and Abrams took with The Force Awakens — that he thought they would have better been served taking the franchise in new directions, rather than revisiting the beats of the original trilogy — but The Phantom Menace stands to this day as a somewhat baffling monument to what can happen when new directions end up leading a beloved franchise down the tubes. It faced the same basic problem as every prequel: The audience already knows the ending. The events of this film mark the beginning of the end for the Jedi, but the endgame is still too far beyond the horizon to glimpse.

As Obi-Wan pursues a new threat, Anakin acts as a double agent between the Jedi Council and Palpatine and is lured into a sinister plan to rule the galaxy. Meanwhile, Luke struggles to help Darth Vader back from the dark side without falling into the Emperor's trap. Three decades after the Empire's defeat, a new threat arises in the militant First Order.

But then an even mightier beast appears, and it swallows up the first. But stripped of hype and breathless expectations, Lucas' first installment offers a happy surprise: it's up to snuff. It sustains the gee-whiz spirit of the series and offers a swashbuckling extragalactic getaway, creating illusions that are even more plausible than the kitchen-raiding raptors of "Jurassic Park. The "Star Wars" franchise was funnier and scrappier when it was new. But it simply wasn't capable of this. There are film series that grow palpably desperate for inspiration as they age, but "Star Wars" isn't one of them.

George Lucas delivered a vision of the series that would change it forever

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace hit theaters 20 years ago, on May 19, , and to celebrate we're looking back at early reactions from critics on the movie that turned the original Star Wars trilogy into something much larger, and in many fans' eyes, much worse. While The Phantom Menace is now generally regarded in some parts of the fan community as the worst film in the franchise and kind of a terrible film all around, it took a lot of people a good amount of time to come to that conclusion. Some critics were smitten by the admittedly kid-centric entry in the franchise while others wrote it off right from the start. It had been 16 years since Return of the Jedi and anticipation was at a galactic level. Some people were swept up in it, with the CGI creatures and settings pulling the wool over their eyes, while others saw right through it all to the soulless shell of a movie underneath. It was released in three formats:. The original album was released to accompany the film May 4 , This release is a single CD containing 17 tracks from selections of the score, meant to stand alone as a separate listening experience and not as one hears the score in the film. John Williams edited each track to present the score as one would hear it in a concert suite. This album was also available on a two- LP set through specialized retailers such as Star Wars Insider.
