Boy Wonder: My Life in Tights by Burt Ward

This book read exactly as you would expect it to. Camp and full of innuendo. It really lives up to Batman legend. No matter what I read I still love Burt Ward (And Robin). I still enjoy the TV show today (which probably says alot about my sense of humour. This book was trashy, gossipy and self-aggrandizing...But I loved it! Of course it has to be taken with a pinch of salt but what autobiography doesnt? Ward isnt the best writer in the world but he succeeds in entertaining. All the behind-the-scenes info and secrets about Adam West were very interesting to me. I should add I still love Adam West, no matter what bad light Ward writes him in. One final note: This is not as scandalous and shocking as the cover proclaims. Well at least by my standards anyway...

Burt Ward

A Brief History of Dick

According to Ward, West was unhappy that Robin was made to look like the smarter of the superheroes, solving problems long before Batman. But he was a marvellous Robin. He was perfect. There was also an orgy incident that became something of Hollywood legend when West and his Batman co-star Frank Gorshin, who played The Riddler, got kicked out of an LA orgy buck naked for talking in character and making the revellers laugh. West was more discreet than Ward when remembering his wild antics as Batman fame took hold. Not even ice packs!

Anyone who's ever worked with children knows that being sweet and wholesome all day is exhausting. As soon as you go on break you want to do a shot of vodka or tell a filthy joke, because otherwise all the saccharine innocence would drive you crazy. That's why the teacher's lounge always smelled like cigarettes and cursing. The cast and crew of children's TV are no exception, except when they unwind, they tend to do it in ways that forever color our memories of our favorite cartoons and Nickelodeon game shows with the knowledge that nefarious boner jokes were lurking just off-screen.

As Batman in the original television series, West represented an icon whose fame rivalled that of James Bond and The Beatles. But ever since the mids, by which time he'd retreated to a farm outside the remote town of Ketchum, Idaho pop. The process of arranging a meeting with West has taken months and involved the submission of previous interviews, dozens of phone messages and emails. Even though the actor has finally agreed to see me, when I get to Idaho his mobile is switched off, and have to spend two days at a Tyrolean-themed motel in Ketchum before I manage to get through to him. He suggests meeting the following morning in a coffee shop, from where we'll drive up to his house. I hope," he adds, "that you are not planning to cannibalise me.
