Bella Figura: How to Live, Love, and Eat the Italian Way by Kamin Mohammadi

Must. Move. To Italy. Now.

This is one of those books where you can live vicariously though the author and feel like you are living their life (and truly wishing you could!) Part Under the Tuscan Sun, a dash of Bridget Jones Diary and some hints of Eat, Pray, Love I am dreaming of Florence, its people, its food, and can easily picture the beautiful scenery after reading this!

Kamin is stuck. Shes in a bit of a rut professionally, personally, and mentally. The stresses of everyday life combined with lingering heartache are wearing down on her immensely and she takes a giant leap of faith and moves to Italy for a year. To write, mostly, but the lessons she ends up learning will change her life forever.

The way this book is structured is my absolute favorite! Every chapter is a month of her new Italian life, and starts with little snippets of the month (Smells, Whats in season, Italian phrases learned) and they all end with AMAZING recipes that were talked about in that chapter. I adore how she shares these almost intimate details, and feel as if Im there with her.

I really enjoyed this book. I cant wait to try some of the recipes, and I aim to embrace Bella Figura!

I received a copy of Bella Figura as part of the Penguin First to Read program in exchange for my honest review.

25 Romantic Italian Phrases (or How to Melt Your Lover’s Heart)

More of a concept than a word, it was created in the 16th century by Baldassare Castiglione in his work The Book of the Courtier. It means a kind of effortless elegance. To be truly sprezzatura, you should make sure you never look like you are trying too hard. There is often gelato involved. It makes the ideal Instagram hashtag to describe that perfect shot of the golden or blue hour. Baby animal, usually a puppy or kitten. It is used as a term of endearment.

Since the publication of The Divine Comedy in the s, the first major literary work written in Italian, the Italian language has had a reputation for being singularly beautiful. When referring to a single beautiful male cat, you say bello gatto , whereas when referring to a single female cat, you say bella gatta. When addressing a woman and wishing to compliment her on her beauty in Italian, say, Sei molta bella! When greeting a beautiful person, say Ciao bella! When exulting over a beautiful day, say Che bella giarnata! In languages other than English, this is sometimes expressed by adding a suffix to the end of the word. Drop the final vowel in the stem and add the suffix -issima or issimo.

I have thirteen tattoos and think they're all pretty cool and definitely don't qualify as "bad-quality". Italian tattoos come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including the Italian cross, the Italian horn, and the green, white, and red Italian flag including a number of variations of it, like the flag condensed in an outline of Italy or in an outline of stars. I've even seen a partially completed sleeve dedicated solely to Italian food; it features a plate of macaroni and meatballs, a jug of wine, and a cannoli. Luckily, unlike Latin which is an extinct language , or Hebrew, or Arabic both very complex languages that use specific character sets in lieu of letters, requiring an exact knowledge of calligraphy , or Gaelic which has numerous different dialects , Italian is a fairly easy language to translate, and most words that exist in English can be translated into Italian without much difficulty. However, be extra careful to make sure you get the Italian spelling correct. Reverse two letters and your beautiful, inspirational tatt becomes nonsensica and silly.
