Life of Fred: Statistics, Expanded Edition

This is a cookbook with many interesting recipes. The frame story concerns Fred, a 6-year-old math genius, and is an extended narrative where he has many adventures and finds opportunities to use statistics. The story is engaging, if unbelievable, and shows statistics in everyday but somewhat contrived contexts. The book is one in a series of books designed for self-study and aimed mostly at homeschoolers, but including some college level topics, such as this one. The organization of the book is unusual, grouping ideas according to how the data is gathered or presented rather than by statistical test.

Statistics is the second book in the Life of Fred University Mathematics Series, however, it can be used before calculus if desired; it provides one years' worth of college-level statistics. There is one half-chapter that does require calculus, but is not necessary to complete the course. Students should have basic knowledge of algebra; a very brief 5-question placement exam is provided at the beginning to test student familiarity with basic concepts. Eight chapters are included as well as a "field guide. Six "cities" exercises are featured at the end of each chapter; sets are named after a city and should each take approximately minutes to complete. Answers to all "cities" problems are included in this "expanded edition.

I had heard of the Life of Fred math curriculum long before I ever contemplated using it. People said that their kids loved it. Like I said, I had never considered using Life of Fred math. We were always Saxon loyalists. My son used Saxon math through Calculus kind of.
