The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

Bestselling author Sherman Alexie tells the story of Junior, a budding cartoonist growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Determined to take his future into his own hands, Junior leaves his troubled school on the rez to attend an all-white farm town high school where the only other Indian is the school mascot.

Heartbreaking, funny, and beautifully written, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which is based on the authors own experiences, coupled with poignant drawings by Ellen Forney that reflect the characters art, chronicles the contemporary adolescence of one Native American boy as he attempts to break away from the life he was destined to live.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian - Pages 99 through 129 Summary & Analysis

Junior loves geometry, and he is excited for his first high school geometry class. Junior also likes masturbating, and he spends hours in the family bathroom with porn magazines. Everybody masturbates, Junior says, and everybody likes it. But he likes geometry even more than masturbating and imagining women. When he was young, Junior says, he liked right angles so much he used to sleep in the closet, but he stopped when Mary, his sister, said he was just trying to crawl back into the womb. According to Junior, Mary spends 23 hours a day doing nothing in the family basement, but Junior says he loves and respects Mary in spite of it.

The Black Eye Of the Month Club

In the first chapter of the novel, Arnlod Spirit introduces himself as Junior. He writes about his life and about his illness and which effects it has has on his brain functions. He explains that he was born with to much water on his brain too much cerebal spinal fluid inside his skull and that it was sucked out of his skull when he was a baby. It has left some damage to his brain, for example his stutter. But that is not the only thing, he has oversized hands and feet and he wore size 11 by the time he was in third grade. Junior looks like a big L when you look at him from the side. Junior prefers to draw and does so all the time.

All rights reserved. Actually, wait, not really, it's just that he was born with "too much cerebral spinal fluid" in his skull 1. That is, "brain grease" 1. Okay, really it's a condition called hydrocephalus. The narrator then compares his brain to a "giant French fry" drowning in brain grease 1.
