Jesse Aarons

The first thing we learn about Jess is his ambition to be "the best runner of the fourth and fifth grades" 4. And that's what drives him for the first several chapters of the book — being the fastest and best runner. It's something he can improve if he works really hard, that will make people proud of him, that's totally accepted in his society, and that will be seen as masculine — all pretty important things for a kid who feels like a bit of an outcast. But while he might have some ability, Jess just isn't naturally the fastest runner: he has to work really hard at it. When Leslie comes along, she easily beats him and all the others, and for all we know she never trained at it. Jess's other, more secret ambition is to become a good artist.

Jess is the principal character of Bridge to Terabithia. The story is told through his eyes, though not in his voice, and thus we are given a deeper glimpse at his soul and motivations than those of anyone else in the book. Jess sees himself as a very ordinary boy, at least until Leslie comes along. He is unable to identify those characteristics that distinguish him from the rest because he is constantly in conflict with the various facets of his life. He has several distinct roles that those around him expect him to play. His family expects him to be the dutiful son and brother, and his own personality often seems to be less important to them than his ability to get the chores done.

Source Jess Aarons is the protagonist of Bridge to Terabithia. A new girl, Leslie Burke, races against him and the other boys, but no matter how fast he runs, she won. She and May Belle instantly bond, but Jess is still reluctant.
