Are These Missing Tweaks the Reason You Hate Studying?

I became a college professor because I love the education process. It would be difficult to find someone who truly loves studying for study sake. What you find are successful college students who manage their approach to school well and put in the work to earn good grades. In short, we hate studying because it feels like work and we are wired to desire feel-good things, not difficult things. This is also why we hate exercising, eating healthy, etc. Ultimately, you already know this, right? You know those are crazy thoughts, right?

You may keep trying but the same thing will happen again and again. If you take a different road you will be severely challenged. All emotional forces within yourself will try to push you back to the safety of the path of least resistance. It was useful when we were cavemen. Just think about the shame you would feel if you needed to return home early because you were homesick! However, if you only have 15 minutes left till your next break, the world suddenly looks a lot brighter.

I rarely study for more than a half hour, even for big final exams worth more than half my grade. When I do study, I usually just skim over the material and do a few practice questions. For some of my math classes I have yet to do a single practice question for homework. Most people study by cramming in as much information before walking into the test room, whereas I consider studying to be no more than a light stretch before running. I had the second highest marks in my high-school class with honors all four years.

Man, I hate exams. I hate everything about them. Clever children are clever, and will continue to be clever regardless of exams, because cleverness is to do with originality, creativity and spark, with taking risks, with oddness, with trotting off down half-made paths and seeing where they lead.
