First, some history: When I was a child, watching my pops get ready to go out was something to behold. He would spend hours preparing his mask every morning for whatever crowd, person or community he faced. Even years later, my pops still took longer to get ready than my mother and sister combined, delicately taking a black Sharpie to any stray grays that might pop up in his goatee. My pops would explain that as a young man in the Dominican Republic, you had to work so hard perfecting yourself, preparing your mask, so that when a young European or American woman came through, she might choose you, as he would put it, might take you home with her, like that was your only way out. Imagine being haunted by a poltergeist Wario: Boo! Slavery is why it still matters when a black man and white woman date, have sex and choose to love another. Recently for the New York Times, a young brown man of color, Christopher Rivas , wrote an opinion piece about social power and sex. He wondered how white supremacy affected his desires and his dating life. After some rather shallow soul-searching, Rivas announces that he no longer wants to date white women :.

Social Issues. Tweet about this Share this on Facebook. I grew up around a lot of white people. I was one of the few black people in my primary school, my secondary schools and college. University is difficult because there were so many people — but out of the 35 musicians on my course, I was most definitely the only black person until third year. But after swimming through all the Brads and the Jacks, you get that one guy.
