Big cook little cook princess and the pea
The Princess and the Pea by Janet StevensThis short story by Hans Christian Andersen is a delightful read for children in their early years. Based on the life of a prince who is desperate to find himself a princess, the prince goes in search to the four corners of the earth with no luck. He returns home to find a princess knocking on the town gate. Astonished, the queen herself lets her in and agrees to give her a place to sleep for the night. Upon revealing her identity the queen decides to test the validity of her claim. so, the queen places a single pea underneath 20 matresses and 20 feather beds for the princess to sleep on. In the morning the queen asked the princess how she slept the night. The princeses responds in ne negative. Thereupon the queen realised that she truly was a princess as only a princess with such delicate skin would be able to feel a pea beneath 20 matresses and 20 featherbeds. Comical and pleasant, the princess and the pea is a light hearted read to treat the children with.

T he humble pea is one of the unsung heroes of the British kitchen as far as I'm concerned. It's the making of egg and chips, the perfect complement to sausage and mash and the icing on the cake of fish pie — a little piece of summer fresh from the freezer all year round. Perhaps because of this very ubiquity, we tend to take peas for granted, which means we don't make the most of their short but glorious season, and the simple, rustic joy of podding peas in the sunshine while pretending to be Ma Larkin from the Darling Buds of May. One Madame de Maintenon, writing at the end of the 17th century, reminds us of what a treat fresh peas must have been before Clarence Birdseye stepped into the fold, as well as how very idle the French aristocracy really were: "The question of peas continues. The anticipation of eating them, the pleasure of having eaten them and the joy of eating them again are the three subjects that our princes have been discussing for four days It has become a fashion — indeed, a passion".
