Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling

The Dursleys were so mean and hideous that summer that all Harry Potter wanted was to get back to the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as hes packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange, impish creature named Dobby who says that if Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike

And strike it does. For in Harrys second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck-up new professor, Gilderoy Lockhart, a spirit named Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girls bathroom, and the unwanted attentions of Ron Weasleys younger sister, Ginny.

But each of these seem minor annoyances when the real trouble begins, and someone -- or something -- starts turning Hogwarts students to stone. Could it be Draco Malfoy, a more poisonous rival than ever? Could it possibly be Hagrid, whose mysterious past is finally told? Or could it be the one everyone at Hogwarts most suspects . . . Harry Potter himself?

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets Chapter 5

The effect of this simple sentence on the rest of the family was incredible: Dudley gasped and fell off his chair with a crash that shook the whole kitchen; Mrs. Dursley gave a small scream and clapped her hands to her mouth; Mr. Dursley jumped to his feet, veins throbbing in his temples. This early breakfast table scene from chapter one shows the attitude of the relatives with whom Harry lives when he is not at the Hogwarts School. These Muggles, or non-magical people, subject Harry to terrible treatment because he is magical and therefore different from their idea of "normal.

Harry is in the summer holidays after his eventful yet exciting first year at Hogwarts school for Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is spending the first part of his summer with the Dursleys and they are expecting a visit from Vernon Dursley's boss so Harry is expected to 'be seen and not heard' 'to make no noise' and to 'shut that bloody owl up'. When Vernon's boss arrives everything goes smoothly, Harry is quiet and in his room… until Dobby the house elf appears. He warns Harry not to go back to Hogwarts, as well as that Dobby makes a lot of noise causing the dinner party downstairs to hear him. As Harry and Dobby venture downstairs, Dobby bewitches Petunia's prize pudding to fly and tells Harry if he decides to go to Hogwarts he will make the pudding fly into the Dursleys as Harry says he couldn't possibly not go to Hogwarts, Dobby makes the pudding fly and land on the unsuspecting dinner guests, then Dobby rather inconveniently for Harry, disapparates with a loud crack. A few hours later and a letter from the Ministry of Magic arrives giving Harry a warning because he, as an under age wizard, supposedly used magic outside of school.

In the second book we begin to gain an insight into Voldermort, as Harry, without realising it, drifts into the memories of his nemesis through an enchanted diary. Whilst in one of the memories locked in the diary Harry learns that his part giant teacher and friend, Rubius Hagrid, was expelled from Hogwarts as a child for keeping a dangerous animal on the grounds. Eventually Hermione is found paralyzed on her way back from the library and a student is dragged into the Chamber of Secrets as one final sacrifice to the monster before Voldermort can finally be returned to full strength.
