How Does a Poem Mean? by John Ciardi

~ The question to put to the poem is not What does it mean? but How does it mean?
What does it mean? inevitably invites paraphrase and inevitably leads away from the poem.
How does it mean? is best asked by absorbing the poetic structure as a poetic structure, i.e., as a countermotion across a silence, and thus leads the analysis to the poem itself. ~

Often, Ciardis commentary so delighted me that I gurgled with glee. His chapter, The Words of Poetry, is remarkable with my multitudinous marks. Ciardi delivers, in Emily Dickinsons words, the desirable gooseflesh which is poetry.

But I did not love all the poems. I had to push myself through quite a few with a sense of relief dominant over a sense of reward when finished.

This book will remain on my shelf of poetry. I look forward to revisiting it with the freedom to skip any parts I wish. Ive added Ciardi to my Fantasy Teacher Team (Wendell Berry teaching literature and David McCullough teaching History are some others).

The Italian Renaissance (AP Euro Review)

The Renaissance

The Italian Renaissance ss was one of the most exciting periods in human civilization. It witnessed a great flourishing of the arts, literature, philosophy, architecture, and politics. However, several factors led to the end of the Renaissance and the end of one of the most creative periods in human history. The term "Renaissance" or "rebirth" or " rinascita " in Italian was coined by Giorgio Vasari around in his book The Lives of the Artists. The Renaissance started in the late 15th century as Italians sought to imitate the lost world of ancient Greece and Rome and move away from gothic art. The Italian, artists, writers, and thinkers who all participated in the Renaissance, sought to create works that were the equal of the ancients, whom they regarded as the pinnacle of civilization. This outlook became known as Humanism and has had a profound impact on European society.

The Italian Renaissance was a period of Italian history that began in the 14th century (Trecento) and lasted until the 17th.

Against this political and economic background stands the cultural development of Italy in the 14th and 15th centuries. The term Italian Renaissance has not gone unchallenged; its meaning and boundaries have aroused much controversy. Nonetheless, the term, redefined, still enjoys overwhelming assent. For some historians such as Lauro Martines , the Renaissance coincides with the life of the commune, stretching back to the 11th century; for others such as Hans Baron , it sprang from the ideological battles that accompanied the wars of Florence and Milan at the beginning of the 15th century. A majority consensus , however, still conceives of the Italian Renaissance as a period of cultural history having no very sharp chronological boundaries but stretching over the years from about to about The early Renaissance had two principal characteristics. Of these the first is humanism, a term that did not carry the present-day ethical or antireligious sense but instead referred to the intensive study of a revived Classical antiquity.

Toward the end of the 14th century A. This was the birth of the period now known as the Renaissance. In fact, the Renaissance in Italy and in other parts of Europe was considerably more complicated than that: For one thing, in many ways the period we call the Renaissance was not so different from the era that preceded it. However, many of the scientific, artistic and cultural achievements of the so-called Renaissance do share common themes, most notably the humanistic belief that man was the center of his own universe. Fifteenth-century Italy was unlike any other place in Europe. It was divided into independent city-states, each with a different form of government.

It peaked during the 15th Quattrocento and 16th Cinquecento centuries, spreading across Europe and marking the transition from the Middle Ages to Modernity. The French word renaissance Rinascimento in Italian means "Rebirth" and defines the period as one of cultural revival and renewed interest in classical antiquity after the centuries labeled the Dark Ages by Renaissance humanists. The Renaissance author Giorgio Vasari used the term "Rebirth" in his Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects but the concept became widespread only in the 19th century, after the works of scholars such as Jules Michelet and Jacob Burckhardt. Finally the Renaissance had a significant effect on the Papal States and Rome , largely rebuilt by Humanist and Renaissance popes such as Alexander VI and Julius II , who were frequently involved in Italian politics , in arbitrating disputes between competing colonial powers and in opposing the Reformation. The Italian Renaissance is best known for its achievements in painting , architecture , sculpture , literature , music , philosophy , science and exploration.
