William Shakspeare's Romeo + Juliet (1996)

The film is a modernization of Shakespeare's play, designed to appeal to a younger modern audience. The warring families the Montagues and the Capulets are represented as warring business empires and swords are replaced by guns. Despite the adaptation, the film retains Shakespeare's original dialogue, albeit edited down for modern cinema audiences. Much of the film's story takes place in the fictional Los Angeles area [ citation needed ] town or suburb called "Verona Beach", which is based on the real life Venice Beach [ citation needed ] a play on the fact that both are cities in Italy. As with the play, a brief part of the film takes place in a location known as Mantua, which is depicted as a desert-like hinterland. Verona Beach is the center of a corporate war between two leaders of industry, "Montague" and "Capulet", rather than just a mere family feud.

I've seen Shakespeare done in drag. I've seen Prince Hal and Falstaff as homosexuals in Portland. In one grand but doomed gesture, writer-director Baz Luhrmann has made a film that a will dismay any lover of Shakespeare, and b bore anyone lured into the theater by promise of gang wars, MTV-style. This production was a very bad idea. If the whole movie had been done in the breakneck, in-your-face style of the opening scenes, it wouldn't be Shakespeare, but at least it would have been something. But the movie lacks the nerve to cut entirely adrift from its literary roots, and grows badly confused as a result.

It is an adaptation and modernization of William Shakespeare 's tragedy Romeo and Juliet. They instantly fall in love when Romeo crashes a party and meets Juliet, despite their being members of feuding families. The film was released on November 1, , by 20th Century Fox to commercial success, and was met with generally positive reviews. In Verona Beach, the Capulets and Montagues are rivals. The animosity of the older generation—Fulgencio and Gloria Capulet and Ted and Caroline Montague—is felt by their younger relatives. A gunfight between Montagues led by Benvolio , Romeo 's cousin, and Capulets led by Tybalt , Juliet 's cousin, creates chaos in the city.
