How Clean is Your House - The Ungrateful Bitch

C leaning can't change your house, but it can create a turning point: once you've stripped things down, you can see new possibilities. You don't need expensive equipment, just a few hours. There's nothing better than a damp cloth, but it must always be clean.

Deep clean

In the past, women would have turned their houses upside down to make sure it was perfect for Easter stock photo. While there's nothing so joyful as spring sunshine streaming in through your windows, it can make a home look, well, just a bit grubby, with every fingerprint and mark suddenly depressingly obvious. Once, women across Britain would have spent the first mild, sunny fortnight each year fighting back — turning their houses upside down and cleaning from top to bottom so everything was perfect for a family Easter. But with more women in full-time work and our busy modern lives leaving less and less time for household maintenance, the annual spring clean has all but vanished. And now we're paying the price.

Soak in the sink: Within eight hours, one bacterium on a damp cloth can turn into six million, so soak your cloth in the kitchen sink in a couple of inches of hot water with a capful of bleach or other multipurpose cleaner. Leave those lids down: Germs from the toilet bowl can become airborne for two hours after each flush and travel as far as six feet. Always replace the lid before flushing! If you need to use a toilet brush, make sure you disinfect it after use. Prevent poisoning: Campylobacter is carried by about half of all dogs and cats, which can cause food poisoning in their owners. If you let pets join you on the sofa, spray the upholstery afterwards with Dettol All in One Disinfectant Spray to kill germs and harmful bacteria.

Perk up wilted specimens with steam from a kettle or iron. Let it sit overnight then brush out the cornstarch. Discard or wash and re-use. Deeper stains can be removed by grating a white vinyl eraser on a lemon zester and rubbing the powder into the keys. Hoover up the residue. Wearing old clothes, goggles and gloves, spray on to the affected areas and leave for 10 minutes.

How Clean Is Your House? Though a ratings success, Channel 4 announced that they had decided to cancel the series in in order to make way for new programming.
