Lifetime war and peace cast
War and Peace by Leo TolstoyIn Russias struggle with Napoleon, Tolstoy saw a tragedy that involved all mankind. Greater than a historical chronicle, War and Peace is an affirmation of life itself, `a complete picture, as a contemporary reviewer put it, `of everything in which people find their happiness and greatness, their grief and humiliation. Tolstoy gave his personal approval to this translation, published here in a new single volume edition, which includes an introduction by Henry Gifford, and Tolstoys important essay `Some Words about War and Peace.

dark and full of terrors
Paul Dano on acting, love and embarrassing parents: 'They have way too many pictures of me'
As Isaac Babel said, if the world could write by itself, it would write like Tolstoy. So why bother with the screen adaptations at all? And sometimes they can add a dimension to the studies of character, even though they always subtract a dimension from the battlefield spectacle, no matter how much they spend. In the , state-funded, Soviet film version directed by Sergei Bondarchuk , the armies were played by the Red Army, plus horses borrowed from the Ministry of Agriculture. Sweeping scope, however, is only the second biggest thing that Tolstoy was offering. He was also concerned with the psychology of his principal characters, and your screenwriter, director and production staff have to do something about that: principally, one hopes, by not making a nonsense of the casting. If they can get that aspect right, the screen can be filled with closeup scenes that will be better than you can imagine.
