More women are choosing to give birth at home, on their own terms, with trained homebirth midwives. Others feel safer and more cared for in a traditional hospital setting, with ready access to monitors and epidurals, while some mothers-to-be opt for a birth experience somewhere in-between, preferring the assistance of a midwife in a hospital setting. Although every woman has their own version of an ideal birthing process or environment in mind, the one thing most every expectant mother would like to be able to control is how much discomfort they experience. This is why many birthing centers and even some traditional hospitals have started integrating what many midwives have used for centuries — aromatherapy designed for maternal comfort care. I have used essential oils at births since becoming a doula in Essential oils are very potent and should be treated as such. As a rule of thumb, I only use essential oils aromatically with doula clients. I also always obtain consent from the woman who will be inhaling the oils. The following three basic oils should be in every hospital bag, homebirth kit or doula bag. They are inexpensive , work great and are a good starting point for someone new to essential oils.

In the past year, more of our pregnant patients have begun to ask about the effectiveness of aromatherapy, or the use of essential oils, for pain management during labor and delivery. Aromatherapy is the art and science of using naturally extracted aromatic essences essential oils from plants to balance and harmonize the body, mind, and spirit every day or during stressful experiences.

Integrating aromatherapy -- the art of using essential plant and flower oils to promote health and well-being in the body -- into your birth plan is a great way to prime and support your body during labor. In labor, oils can be used at different stages in a myriad of ways. As a doula, I've found aromatherapy most helpful during the early and active stages of labor. When used correctly, aromatherapy can make a successful shift and center the mother's energy. To truly reap the benefits of aromatherapy, the essential oils should be pure and therapeutic grade. Make sure the oils don't contain any synthetic fragrances, volume extenders, or less expensive oils as substitutes.
