Picture a dimly lit alley steps away from the hustle and bustle of a typical Tokyo street. Along a row of wooden doors sits a hidden oasis of food and drink where locals congregate and strangers make new friends. A mix of J-pop and Japanese oldies fill the air and ride a smoke scented draft wafting from the kitchen. Small bites of fried goodies and raw seafood, pepper the tables and glimmers and random lights are caught on the edges of cocktail glasses. This is Hanzo Izakaya.

I recently had the chance to share a dinner of two freshly caught fish with a group of old friends, an occasion that also allowed me to reflect on all the funny sounds folks make when they're enjoying their food. In contrast to the slurping, panting and chewing associated with careless eating, the soundscape of blissful eating includes clicks, clucks, purrs, hums and moans so intense they wouldn't be considered fit for polite company if the noisemaker wasn't armed with a knife and fork. Which led me to wonder: Are all joyful sounds acceptable at table? A few chefs at the forefront of new cooking -- including The Fat Duck's Heston Blumenthal, who's so intrigued by the food-sound connection that he famously served an iPod with a seafood dish -- believe listening to oneself chewing can enhance the dining experience.

We stopped here on the way home from Atlantic City because of all of the great reviews. Best place to eat in Toms River. So many things on the menu to choose from. Something for everyone. We love seeing the servers in their Want different? This is it!
The smell alone is enough to send you into a craving fest. The food is soooooo delicious!! Great job!! Had lunch with my daughter. We ordered a whole Philly cheesesteak and shoestring fries to share. Waitress was nice enough to have it divided in the kitchen.
