“The night is dark and full of terrors.”

Melisandre , often referred to as the Red Woman , was a Red Priestess in the religion of R'hllor, the Lord of Light , and had been a close counselor to Stannis Baratheon in his campaign to take the Iron Throne. She continued to serve Jon as an advisor until she was banished from the North following the Battle of the Bastards , when Jon learned that she had sacrificed Shireen Baratheon and countless innocent people while in Stannis's service. However, she later united the newly crowned King in the North with Daenerys Targaryen , believing that they both had pivotal roles to play in the Great War. When the army of the dead descended , she returned to Winterfell , wielding the power of R'hllor during the final battle against the Night King. With the living victorious, Melisandre finally welcomed death. She claims to wield powerful magical abilities, particularly the power of prophecy. Melisandre wears a large ruby necklace that seems to glow whenever she performs her magic.

Game of Thrones is a show that's spawned memes and catchphrases the world over. Season 2 was no less shabby, sparking one of the show's most threatening phrases: "The Night is Dark and Full of Terrors. It actually may be directly related to the Night King. The world of Westeros and Essos is filled with different religions. In the North, people worship the Old Gods, a spiritual oneness with nature.

The Lord of Light has been described as a "fire god" and its clergy "fire priests", as His worship centers around fire and light. The faith of the Lord of Light is the majority religion in several of the Free Cities , and extends to Asshai in the distant east. Worship of the Lord of Light is almost unheard of in Westeros.
