The pros and cons of hitch hiking
Roger Waters: The Pros and Cons of Hitch-Hiking by Roger WatersGeorge Roger Waters is an English rock musician; singer, bassist, guitarist, songwriter, and composer. He is best known for his 1965–1985 career with the band Pink Floyd; he was credited as their main songwriter (after the departure of Syd Barrett), bass player and one of their lead vocalists (along with David Gilmour and, to a lesser extent, Richard Rick Wright). He was also the lyrical mastermind behind many of the bands concept albums, especially The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, and The Final Cut, as well as being the originator of much of the bands well-known symbolism, such as the Pink Floyd pigs.
Following this, he began a moderately successful solo career releasing three studio albums and staging one of the largest concerts ever, The Wall Concert in Berlin in 1990. In 2005 he released an opera, Ca Ira, and joined Pink Floyd at the Live 8 concert in London, on 2 July 2005, for their first public performance with Waters in 24 years.
35 Years Ago: Roger Waters Goes Solo on ‘The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking’
Roger Waters commenced his post-Pink Floyd career with a concept album that he largely composed while still an active member of the group in the late s. The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking was actually released a year before Waters made the official announcement of his departure from the band, but by early he had apparently already made up his mind. The previous year, Pink Floyd released The Final Cut , which got a disappointing reception both critically and commercially, and Pink Floyd did not opt to support the album with a tour, as both Waters and guitarist David Gilmour began work on separate solo records. The concept of The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking was developed by Waters in and presented to Pink Floyd along with an alternate concept. Waters had decided early on to use whichever was not chosen by the band as a solo project and, in , he revisited this concept. Musical conductor and pianist Michael Kamen co-produced the album with Waters and together they put together a talented ensemble of musicians and singers.
The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking is the first solo album by Roger Waters; it was released in , the year before Waters announced his departure from Pink.

Roger Waters - The Pros Cons of Hitch Hiking
How could that be? And, in fact, I made demo tapes of them both -- and, in fact, presented both demo tapes to the rest of the Floyd, and said, 'Look, I'm going to do one of these as a solo project and we'll do one as a band album, and you can choose. What if David Gilmour and company had selected The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking , which focuses on the far-less personal topic of mid-life crisis, rather than that magnum opus on Waters' growing alienation from his own audience? Could Pros and Cons , instead, have been its own huge hit? Or would a Floyd version have endured a similarly dismal fate -- and thus hastened Waters' decision to go his own way? That eventually happened anyway, of course, but only after 's The Final Cut.
