The Girls by Lori Lansens

Meet Rose and Ruby: sisters, best friends, confidantes, and conjoined twins. Since their birth, Rose and Ruby Darlen have been known simply as the girls. They make friends, fall in love, have jobs, love their parents, and follow their dreams. But the Darlens are special. Now nearing their 30th birthday, they are historys oldest craniopagus twins, joined at the head by a spot the size of a bread plate.

When Rose, the bookish sister, sets out to write her autobiography, it inevitably becomes the story of her short but extraordinary life with Ruby, the beautiful one. From their awkward first steps--Rubys arm curled around Roses neck, her foreshortened legs wrapped around Roses hips-- to the friendships they gradually build for themselves in the small town of Leaford, this is the profoundly affecting chronicle of an incomparable life journey.

As Rose and Rubys story builds to an unforgettable conclusion, Lansens aims at the heart of human experience--the hardship of loss and struggles for independence, and the fundamental joy of simply living a life. This is a breath taking novel, one that no reader will soon forget, a heartrending story of love between sisters.

Rose and Ruby Darlen have separate minds, but they share a network of blood vessels and a lifetime of memories. At 29, they are the oldest surviving pair of craniopagus conjoined twins. But the headaches that Ruby has been suffering stem from an aneurysm in Rose's brain, and a doctor has given them six months to live. While bookish Rose doesn't want to die without leaving a written record of her life, Ruby can think of better ways to spend her remaining months than cramped over a notepad. But because she doesn't believe that Rose should -- or could -- write an autobiography of a life not lived alone, they each take turns writing chapters, agreeing not to read each other's words until the book is completed. The novel alternates between their two voices, which are as unique as the girls themselves. Rose is a poet, prone to "rounding off," as Ruby likes to put it, while Ruby is down to earth, a more reliable if less lyrical narrator.
