Jane Eyre - Whats better Jane Austen...or Jane Eyre? Showing 1-50 of 82

Wow, this is the best answer/description I think ive come across! thank you for this! I whole heartedly agree that they are both fruit but you cannot compare them. I have recently finished all of Austens works, and have only one left of the Bronte sisters and I would have to say I like them both. Jane Eyre is in my favorites for sure, where as, pride and prejudice was a tough nut to crack for me. it took time to sludge through for me. Love the movie! but the book was a little too much for me.

A Comparison of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and Emma by Jane Austen

I n January , Jane Austen sat down to write a revolutionary novel. Some of the great modernists were perplexed. What is it all about? Austen left behind no artistic manifesto, no account of her narrative methods beyond a few playful remarks in letters to her niece, Anna. There have been scattered exceptions. I think she has much to teach me.

First, the similarities. In Emma, "The evening of this day was very long, and melancholy, at Hartfield. The weather added what it could of gloom. A cold stormy rain set in, and nothing of July appeared but in the trees and shrubs, which the wind was despoiling" : Jane Eyre wanders similarly in a "leafless shrubbery," where "cold winter wind" brings somber clouds and penetrating rain 7. Like him, Jane Fairfax is sickly but honorable. Even Charles I, whom Fairfax helped depose, called him a man who "ever kept his word" qtd.

The book contains elements of social criticism , with a strong sense of Christian morality at its core, and is considered by many to be ahead of its time because of Jane's individualistic character and how the novel approaches the topics of class , sexuality , religion and feminism. Jane Eyre is divided into 38 chapters. It was originally published in three volumes in the 19th century, comprising chapters 1 to 15, 16 to 27, and 28 to The second edition was dedicated to William Makepeace Thackeray.
