Odysseus and Penelope

The wily wife: why Homer's patient, faithful Penelope is more cunning than Odysseus

Penelope , in Greek mythology , a daughter of Icarius of Sparta and the nymph Periboea and wife of the hero Odysseus. They had one son, Telemachus. To spare herself their importunities she insists that they wait until she has woven a shroud for Laertes, father of Odysseus. Every night for three years, until one of her maids reveals the secret, she unravels the piece that she has woven by day so that she will not have to give up hope for the return of her beloved husband and remarry. When at length Odysseus does return, she makes him prove his identity and finally accepts him. In the ancient world there were variant stories. In one of them, Telegonus, son of Odysseus and Circe , sets forth to find his father but mistakenly kills him.

Till you come to me. Somewhere in the bubbling cauldron that is my brain, romance and myth merged together, and I started thinking about my favorite love stories from Greek and Roman mythology. So much death! Unlike poor Echo and Narcissus above, Odysseus and his wife Penelope do experience a happy ending. The storyline is simple: Odysseus has spent 20 years trying to return to his home in Ithaka after the end of the Trojan War.

It was 20 years since Odysseus had left his palace, but still his wife Penelope had some hope he would return, though most believed him dead.
