Stanza One: In a reflective tone, the speaker recalls her interactions with other women. For this reason, other women are baffled by her appeal and want to uncover the secret to her powerful presence. The speaker attempts to solve this mystery by describing her unique physical characteristics and mannerisms. However, she claims that when she tries to explain her allure to these women, they never believe her. The speaker insinuates that they may be jealous, or perhaps they are simply incapable of believing that a woman who does not fit conventional standards of beauty can be beautiful at all. Stanza Two: The speaker proceeds to describe her effect on men. She explains how she exudes a powerful sensuality that draws their attention whenever she walks into a room.

In Phenomenal Woman , Angelou celebrates her body and the uniqueness that separates her from other women. Angelou, who died at the age of 86 in , is one of the most celebrated poets and memoirists in American literature. The majority of her work deals with both the racism and sexism she experienced as an African American woman.
