Spawn, Book 1: Beginnings by Todd McFarlane

These are the stories that started the legend. Al Simmons, formerly one of our government`s greatest soldiers, was resurrected from the ashes of his own grave. Reborn as a creature from the depths of Hell, disfigured, homeless, and alone, this new warrior known as Spawn now wanders the shadowy alleys of New York City in search of his past life. Robbed of his memories and identity, this freshly created man whose body is nothing more than scars and torn flesh becomes a protector of the weak, the poor, the downtrodden and other victims of circumstance. While Spawn tries to piece together his confusing existence, an unwelcome mentor reveals the purpose of his abrupt return to earth. But since this guide comes from the dark side, can he be trusted to tell the truth? And just what is the truth? Find out why Spawn exists, who his real enemies are, and whom he can trust, for in this twisted world of shadow players, nothing is as it appears.

Spawn 20 Years Later: Looking Back at the Quintessential ’90s Comic Book

For nearly 30 years, Al Simmons has been doling out justice and revenge to guilty parties in the pages of Image's Spawn comics. It marks a solid run for a comic book character, but becomes nearly unparalleled when you consider that the antihero's creator, Todd McFarlane , has been writing Al's stories every step of the way. All his hard work will pay off this summer with the release of Spawn , a momentous milestone issue that will tie the record for longest-running creator-owned comic on the planet with Dave Sim's Cerebus. That's the story to me over everything else I'm gonna be an example and Image Comics is gonna be a glowing example.

It did not end well for either of them. Spawn was the flag-bearer of an infant Image, but things have not gone well since then. That many issues ago, it was the beginning of the Image era, and a new dawn for creator-owned comics. Since this soul-trading business usually involves something priceless, and the one thing that Al wanted above all else was to be reunited with his wife Wanda. Alas, this emotional premise dragged on for way too long, resulting in an overload of melodrama. Spawn is a character that looks sensational on paper, and is even more awesome as an action figure.

My favorite issue was Spawn #, which to me is CLASSIC. Back when Angela I figure, that many issues, there must be a good arc or three.
