A Giant List of Books about Friendship
I had the privilege of reviewing a new book about friendship — and the author is giving away signed copies to two of my readers! This is the perfect book to read a child who has a friend that seeks trouble. Best Friends for Frances , by Russell Hoban. This classic story about friendship may get a little long for young listeners — but the plot of fickle friendships is timeless. I admit that Frances books bored me when I was a kid, but I enjoy them now. Bob and Otto , by Robert Bruel. At first I thought this book was a rehash of the same old story of caterpillars who turn into butterflies.
Childhood friendships are such an important part of school life, but can often be something of a minefield to navigate and can prove a huge challenge for young children. Hector and Hummingbird. Hector and Hummingbird are the best of friends. Everything Hector does, Hummingbird wants to do too — eating custard apples, scratching and sleeping in trees. Sometimes Hector just wants a bit of time on his own!
An Important Parenting Mission
One of the biggest challenges of being a parent is figuring out how to help your child learn how to navigate sticky situations. It's Amanda's eleventh birthday, and she is super excited. But from the start, everything goes wrong. The worst part is that she and her best friend, Leo — with whom she's shared every birthday — are on the outs and this will be the first birthday they have spent apart. After a failed start on her own, we read it together, and boy, am I glad we did. I had forgotten how tough this book can be. Thanks to Harriet, my daughter and I had many conversations about the challenges of growing up, maintaining friendships, and navigating life as a tween.
