For Those About to Rock: A Road Map to Being in a Band by Dave Bidini

Playing in a rock band is the stuff of dreams. What is the reality? Dave Bidini, rhythm guitarist with the Rheostatics and acclaimed author of On a Cold Road, knows firsthand. In this wise, witty, and often irreverent book, he tackles the questions that any kid with a penchant to be on stage has asked. How do you decide what to play? How do you deal with tensions among the musicians? What happens when one person becomes more popular than the others? How do you get to gigs, and what do you wear?

Bidini handles his material with honesty and authority. From the serious considerations to the frivolous issues, Bidini takes young readers through forming a band, practices, performing, and the business of show business. Interspersed with advice and observations are hilarious anecdotes pulled from his own experience and the experiences of musicians he knows.

This is a sure-fire winner for all young musicians, even if their instrument of choice is the air guitar and their only venue is their shower stall.

AC/DC: ‘For Those About To Rock We Salute You’

On Nov. It then began its march to No. But the Australian hard rockers' eighth album wasn't their breakthrough -- that honor goes to the previous year's Back in Black. For Those About to Rock But it was a deserved one, given the seemingly insurmountable odds of surviving, never mind thriving, following the alcohol-related death of singer Bon Scott. Then, in the spring of , Atlantic Records decided to capitalize on the band's rising popularity by belatedly releasing 's Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap in the U.

It was the band's seventh internationally released studio album and the eighth to be released in Australia. It was released on November 23, Released in , the album is a follow-up to their highly successful album Back in Black. In their original review, Rolling Stone magazine declared it to be their best album. In Australia, the album peaked at No. It was the band's biggest album by far, having gone platinum multiple times, a feat all the more remarkable because it featured a new vocalist, Brian Johnson , who had replaced the late Bon Scott. In fact, Back in Black was such a smash that Atlantic Records in the United States finally released the band's album Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap , an LP the label had initially rejected because they felt the production was subpar.

While Back in Black was infused with the energy and spirit of paying tribute to Bon Scott , it became apparent on the follow-up that the group really did miss Scott more than it initially indicated. And the band itself slowed down the tempo frequently, sounding less aggressive and inspired. There is still some decent material here -- the title track, for example, which became a concert staple with cannon-firing sound effects. AllMusic relies heavily on JavaScript. The title and central lyric of the song are based on an ancient salute used by Roman prisoners to be executed in the Colosseum , " Ave, Caesar, morituri te salutant " "Hail Caesar, we who are about to die, salute you. However, Angus Young later said that the inspiration for the cannons came from a very different source. Angus recalled that "someone had the wedding on in the next room The cannons fired in the song are mixed with exploding fireworks. However the actual takes were recorded later the next month as the mobile truck used to record the album Mobile One was being used to record Peter Gabriel 's 4th eponymous album during the marriage of Charles and Diana. It is also the song that concludes the most recent tour, Rock or Bust. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

I have always loved the cover. A simple cannon. Of course, we were gobsmacked as there were ten more new songs, which I will get into shortly, but the real kicker was that it was a gatefold album. We must have stared at that picture for minutes… and no, we were not baked! Not too many bands did gatefold sleeves at the time — well in my collection anyways. Ha ha ha ha… no shit Sherlock.
