Flutter and Hum / Aleteo y Zumbido: Animal Poems / Poemas de Animales by Julie Paschkis

This is a book of poems by Julie Paschkis. All the poems are about animals. The poems are written in both English and Spanish. Because the poems are simple and they are about a wide variety of interesting animals, they would appeal to younger children. Many of the poems are alliterative or rhyming and they are silly and fun for kids. I really love how the poems are offered in both languages. Children can be exposed to a new language and bilingual children will enjoy having the poems in both their home language and another language. In addition, the illustrations are colorful and quite beautiful.

Storytime Issue 49 features a rather wonderful short poem by Victorian nursery rhyme writer William Brighty Rands called The Cat of Cats , which is illustrated by MacKenzie Haley with the most gorgeous colour palette. Aside from the fact that so many of our young readers love cats, we chose this particular cat poem for a number of reasons:. Using this poem as a base, they can write their own 8-line poems about cats or their favourite animals or pets. All you have to do is follow the formula William Brighty Rands used, which you can do in three easy steps…. Use a great simile to describe the way your animal moves or behaves. Think up two lines to describe what the animal does well.

The animal kingdom is filled with almost an infinite variety of creatures. Scientists discover new species and subspecies every year. Each one is a wonder unto itself and one could labor for years to uncover its secrets. It is an unfortunate fact that the closest that most of us get to wildlife is through bars at the zoo. Our urban lifestyle has the effect of cutting us off from the glorious world of the animal kingdom. Every animal has a lesson to teach us that we are not hearing. We may think that we have evolved away from contact with animal kingdom, the question is, at what cost?
