Your Self-Control Does Not Rest on You

Peter writes about self-control temperance that is to be evident in the life of someone who gives all diligence to add virtue to his faith, and grows to love. Galatians Is self-control just suppressing the vices and tendencies in our nature that we know to be sin? It is obvious that the self-control that is meant here is not something that a person either can or shall achieve on his own. Neither is it something on the level of abstaining from outward things. Already in the old covenant we have been given wise counsel concerning a life of confidence in God.

What does the Bible say about? No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize?

When we practice self-control, we do so by limiting and restraining those things which are in opposition to what God requires. Self-control in a person can take many forms. In other words, self-control will be shown in different ways for each individual person. For example:. If someone does something bad to you — some people may want to get even with that person by abusing them or hitting them. The person needs to exercise self-control by restraining themselves. If you like beer - you may be tempted to drink a lot of it and become drunk.
