Another name for a parable is an allegory. Jesus Christ did much of his teaching in parables. Telling tales of familiar characters and activities was a favorite way for ancient rabbis to hold an audience's attention while illustrating an important moral point. Parables appear in both the Old and New Testaments but are more easily recognizable in the ministry of Jesus. After many rejected him as Messiah, Jesus turned to parables, explaining to his disciples in Matthew that those who sought God would grasp the deeper meaning, while the truth would be hidden from unbelievers.

Peter rushed out of the shop and by midafternoon had rounded up all of his associates, and leaving them in a grove by the shore, he went in quest of Jesus. But he could not find him, for the Master had gone to a different grove to pray. And they did not see him until late that evening when he returned to Zebedee's house and asked for food. The next day he sent his brother James to ask for the privilege of speaking in the synagogue the coming Sabbath day. And the ruler of the synagogue was much pleased that Jesus was again willing to conduct the service. Yahweh is our judge, Yahweh is our lawgiver, Yahweh is our king; he will save us.

Yet it can be easy to overlook this prominent theme in the life of Jesus, and tempting to assume rather than investigate the importance of the kingdom for Jesus. When we miss the significance of the kingdom to Jesus, however, we can miss the significance of the kingdom for biblical theology and ethics. So how important was the kingdom of God to Jesus? What was his relationship to the in-breaking of the eschatological kingdom? Jesus inaugurates the kingdom. With the coming of Christ, the kingdom begins not in the coronation of a mighty king but in the birth of a crying baby. What Israel had long awaited, Christ had now inaugurated.

Who among us could live without computers? We get pleasure from them, we swear at them, we need them.
