Billy Joel by Fred SchruersThe long-awaited, all-access biography of a music legend
In Billy Joel, acclaimed music journalist Fred Schruers draws upon more than one hundred hours of exclusive interviews with Joel to present an unprecedented look at the life, career, and legacy of the pint-sized kid from Long Island who became a rock icon.
Exhibiting unparalleled intimate knowledge, Schruers chronicles Joel’s rise to the top of the charts, from his working-class origins in Levittown and early days spent in boxing rings and sweaty clubs to his monumental success in the seventies and eighties. He also explores Joel’s creative transformation in the nineties, his dream performance with Paul McCartney at Shea Stadium in 2008, and beyond.
Along the way, Schruers reveals the stories behind all the key events and relationships—including Joel’s high-profile marriages and legal battles—that defined his path to stardom and inspired his signature songs, such as “Piano Man,” “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant,” “New York State of Mind,” and “She’s Always a Woman.” Throughout, he captures the spirit of a restless artist determined to break through by sharing, in his deeply personal lyrics, the dreams and heartbreaks of suburban American life.
Comprehensive, vibrantly written, and filled with Joel’s memories and reflections—as well as those of the family, friends, and band members who have formed his inner circle, including Christie Brinkley, Alexa Ray Joel, Jon Small, and Steve Cohen—this is the definitive account of a beloved rock star’s epic American journey.
The song was the second top 10 single from the album, after the previous single " Modern Woman. The song's music video, directed by Russell Mulcahy and produced and conceived by Paul Flattery, features Joel and his band performing in the basement of a building on St. Mark's Place in New York City's East Village and also features shots of various people in the city who eventually gather round the building's windows to see Joel perform. Most appear to be enjoying the concert except one woman on a fire escape who yells at them to "shut up! His then-wife Christie Brinkley appears in the video holding their baby daughter, Alexa. The song differs from most Joel songs in that it is based on electric guitar rather than piano, which gives it a hard rock edge compared to his usual soft rock balladry.

Billy Joel is the sixth best-selling artist in US chart history, despite never really wanting to be a performer, and a career hobbled by contractual wrangles almost before it had begun. Realising he lacked the requisite killer instinct, he instead focused on his true calling, revealed after seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show in Joel went on to serve a thorough apprenticeship in local bands such as the Emerald Lords and the Lost Souls, before cutting two albums of underwhelming blue-eyed soul and psychedelia in the late 60s with The Hassles. In his most unlikely musical detour, Joel broke away from The Hassles to form the heavy psychedelic organ duo Attila. Advised that the best way to further his ambitions was to record an album of his own, Joel put out his solo debut, Cold Spring Harbor named after a neighbourhood near his Long Island hometown in
