Tooth Imprints on a Corn Dog by Mark Leyner

halfway through this, i was like, what the hell is this?? its like theyre witty columns for magazines, or something! then i looked it up and it turned out thats exactly what they were... he was writing a column for esquire at the time, and a lot of the pieces are from there, though some also appeared in the new yorker, in shouts and murmurs, and elle and some other places. so, i guess its stupid to hold what they are against them, but... i seem to be doing that anyway. dont get me wrong, theyre funny and everything, but compared to the earlier stuff, theyre just so simple and straightforward. lines that wouldve just whizzed past you before if you werent paying attention, now he unpacks them for you bit by bit, like any normal human being would do. still, though, theres a lot of good stuff. ITS JUST NOT LIKE IT WAS BEFORE

As a child, I was absolutely forbidden to express or inwardly harbor self-doubt.

David Foster Wallace: The future of fiction in the information age

Mark Leyner born is an American postmodernist author. Leyner employs an intense and unconventional style in his works of fiction. His stories are generally humorous and absurd, with bizarre juxtapositions of people, places and things reminiscent of a Mad Lib.

Throughout his first collection of essays reprinted from publications including Esquire and The New Republic , Leyner the writer fashions himself into Leyner the loonier-than-life persona. He seizes upon popular obsessions as disparate as bodybuilding, parenthood, fear of government conspiracies and the mania for designer goods and weaves them into howlingly absurd scenarios that he depicts as if they were perfectly ordinary. And yet, his own effusiveness becomes a weird celebration of the very things he ridicules.
