This primer takes able readers from their penultimate school year to well into the second year quantum mechanics course in physics at Cambridge University. It is not a textbook, but a primer introducing essential ideas, analytical skills and the solving of problems much in the style of the Cambridge physics course. Chapters 2 - 5 are also suitable for university courses. Chapter 1 is available as a free sample. Chapter 1 revises essential school mathematics and classical physics used throughout this book and in higher physics generally. It also prepares for university entrance.

Rutter was commissioned in the s for the Cavendish Laboratory by the Russian physicist Kapitsa , and is perhaps his reference to Lord Rutherford , the then Cavendish Professor. Its chapters are the notes from the quantum mechanics course taught during the Senior Physics Challenge held at the Cavendish Laboratory.
