Beats to her own drum

Michael Jackson's Drummer Jonathan Moffett Performs "Beat It"
She marches to the beat of her own drum – and I love that
So different to her sister yet equally as strong willed and full of life. I mean how do you respond to that? At first I panicked and joined her teacher trying to get her in the pool but the more we tried to, the more resolute she became. In the end I shrugged my shoulders and let her sit the lesson out. We become too aware of wanting just to fit in and be accepted. When my friends were climbing trees or jumping off walls I was the one standing at the bottom looking worried and telling them to be careful and to just get down. I often see this in myself as a parent too.
When you first meet Kenyan Muthoni Ndonga, A. Muthoni Drummer Queen or MDQ, for short , you do feel like you are in the presence of a queen — a queen with a lot on her mind, a lot to attend to and a lot she desires to accomplish during her reign. She is smart, funny, self-confident, full of energy and passion, and doesn't suffer fools lightly. In many ways, she epitomizes the 21st century African woman, which may be why she was recently asked to give a TED talk which will drop online Sept. But she was also very happy to share her time with us as she prepared for what would be an amazing set of singing, dancing, and yes, drumming, at this year's Festival International de Jazz in Montreal. Then, over time, that kind of got stifled, and you convince yourself you want to be a lawyer, or whatever else the world needs. But then around 21 or 22, I was like 'O.
It's an age-old saying that I've heard over and over again, and yet it's something I think not only myself but many others struggle with. It sounds great put into words; who wouldn't want to live by their own terms and not care what others think of them? How absolutely freeing that must be. But in reality, it's easy to let our insecurities and need to please others make this quote seem impossible to live out. That's why I've always admired people who have the guts to be themselves, completely and unapologetically. They walk around with a certain air about them that just exudes confidence. They're the type of people who walk around with their heads held high; they smile at strangers; they are unafraid to strike up conversations with the person next to them in line because they simply just love people; they have their own style and they own it; and they aren't afraid to go after what they want.
March to the beat of your own drum means going about in your own way disregarding popular social norm and such. So “The beat of you drum”.

Inspiring life quotes can help your confidence about your own life
Are you marching to the beat of your own drum? Easier said than done sometimes, right? We may think we are…or we start out all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, inspired by a new idea, ready to take the world by storm…and BOOM, some event rocks everything as it drains the air right out of our life balloon. Our bodies hold anniversaries within our cells for a reason. You can resist them. You can feel sorry for yourself.
The Bitch: the abusive autocrat, she lies, cheats, and steals her way to the top. The Black Widow: the beguiling siren, she lures victims into her web. An expert at seduction of every variety, she uses her charms to get her way. The drum to which she marches misses many a beat, but to her, it is the rest of the world that is out of step. The Parasite: she collaborates for her own comfort. She goes along with any atrocity, so long as her own security is assured.
