Julie Powell is 30-years-old, living in a rundown apartment in Queens and working at a soul-sucking secretarial job that’s going nowhere. She needs something to break the monotony of her life, and she invents a deranged assignment. She will take her mothers dog-eared copy of Julia Childs 1961 classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and she will cook all 524 recipes. In the span of one year.
At first she thinks it will be easy. But as she moves from the simple Potage Parmentier (potato soup) into the more complicated realm of aspics and crepes, she realizes there’s more to Mastering the Art of French Cooking than meets the eye. With Julia’s stern warble always in her ear, Julie haunts the local butcher, buying kidneys and sweetbreads. She sends her husband on late-night runs for yet more butter and rarely serves dinner before midnight. She discovers how to mold the perfect Orange Bavarian, the trick to extracting marrow from bone, and the intense pleasure of eating liver.
And somewhere along the line she realizes she has turned her kitchen into a miracle of creation and cuisine. She has eclipsed her life’s ordinariness through spectacular humor, hysteria, and perseverance.

Julie & Julia: Stop Hating Julie Powell, Please
Just because. Julie is distraught by this. I am up to July on the blog and have not yet come across any mention of this event in the blog itself. There is a very long thread about it on Chowhound. This is what Julie Powell herself said about it in a blog post:. Both of those things are true — Julia, I think, from what I gather, was less irritated than simply uninterested.
Powell was born and raised in Austin , Texas. She graduated from Amherst College in with a double major in theater and creative writing. Child was reported to have been unimpressed with Powell's blog, believing her determination to cook every recipe in Mastering the Art of French Cooking in a year to be a stunt. Child's editor, Judith Jones , said in an interview:. Flinging around four-letter words when cooking isn't attractive, to me or Julia. She didn't want to endorse it. What came through on the blog was somebody who was doing it almost for the sake of a stunt.
Julia Child does something that seems so totally out of character that even on the way out, people were still shaking their heads. I was right there in the middle of it. Before I go any further, I have to warn you that this column is as full of spoilers as an unplugged refrigerator in August. And you certainly should see it. Meryl Streep is astonishing. The way she captures Julia Child is something special. Streep inhabits her in a way that is eerie.
